Eventbrite Checkout

Overview –

I lead a redesign of the embedded ticket & checkout experience – the most widely-used feature by event organizers.

Context –

Before the redesign, customers would select tickets on the organizer's website, click the checkout button, and be redirected to checkout on Eventbrite's website to complete the purchase. The ticket selection widget and checkout page were also visually outdated and filled with usability and accessibility issues.

The goal was simple:

Design a modern, streamlined, high-conversion checkout experience that's fully contained within the organizer's website.

Competitive landscape

At the time, several competitors were emerging, offering modern checkout experiences.

I evaluated their offerings, observing their strengths, and pinpointing areas for improvement that could inspire us. One standout we identified was implementing a streamlined experience through a modal. Our hypothesis suggested that this approach would result in increased conversion rates and reduced abandonment.

Research and iteration

Feedback loops are the key to the design process. Did the designer seek to disprove their hypothesis, or merely validate all of their assumptions? Were they appropriately rigorous for the scope of the work?

Design system

Throughout the project, the basic building blocks of our design system were still taking shape. We had to zone in on defining components and patterns that could extend beyond this project for reuse. With the help of our design system experts, we created new variations of our existing modal, tweaked our ticket designs, revamped our price breakdown component, and created more flexible input controls. We put all of these through rigorous usability testing and and incorporated them back into the design system.

Outcome –

My efforts contributed to an 88% reduced checkout-related support load, increased conversion rates by 2x on average, and reduced the overall checkout time by ~2 min.
